Diwrnod Owain Glynd?r Day
Date: 26th Sep 2022 @ 4:27pm
As part of our growing calendar of Welsh Cultural events Ysgol Maes Hyfryd are celebrating Diwrnod Owain Glynd?r, an increasingly popular day in Wales, which commemorates the day Owain was crowned as Prince of Wales by his followers in the year 1400. He is one of the most important people in Welsh history, and the history of the UK as a whole so it was exciting to get to know a bit more about him and his connection to our local area.
We visited Flint Castle to learn about why it was so important to Owain because it was a strong castle with very thick walls built by the English King Edward 1 to be close to the river and to Chester so it could be reinforced with English troops. Flint Castle was the first piece in the Iron Ring - a circle of castles built all round North Wales. Capturing and attacking these castles was a big part of Owain Glynd?r's strategy.
The students all had a great time at the castle. Thankfully the sun came out so we had plenty of time to explore and feel the stone that is part of the history of our country. After returning to school students followed up by making Owain Glynd?r shields and learning more about the Welsh hero we were celebrating.
We can all celebrate the fact that we live and learn in Wales and celebrating these events is an important part of our identity and sense of cynefin. We look forward to celebrating more Welsh cultural events thoughout the year!
