Ysgol Maes Hyfryd has a lot to offer as a school. We have well-equipped classrooms which are large and spacious and suited to the needs of the pupils.
Each class has their own kitchen area, where we encourage pupils to make their own snacks to help with their independent living skills.
We have a specifically designed Independent Living Skills Room and all classes are timetabled to use it for food technology, self-help skills including using the washing machine, cookers, microwaves, dishwasher.
We have two library areas in school which provide flexible space with a wide and inclusive range of resources to support learning and teaching throughout the school.
- to have a vibrant role in the development of a culture that promotes wider reading, motivated readers and learners for life.
- to provide a place for collaborative learning, creativity, and for developing independent research and information literacy skills
What is a Sensory Garden?
A sensory garden is the ideal way to help improve the sensory development. It is an outdoor garden environment designed to stimulate a person’s senses. Using a combination of the landscape, the aromas and colours of plants and flowers and stimulating interactive sensory equipment which pupils are encouraged to engage with sensory play which is a great way of developing and improving senses.
Ysgol Maes Hyfryd have two sensory rooms, a light room and a dark room.
What is a sensory room used for?
A sensory room is a special room designed to develop a person's sense, usually through special lighting, music, and objects. It can be used as a therapy for children with limited communication skills.
The Dark Room and Light Room are a specialist areas with a dual purpose. By following specific personalised targets pupils develop their visual attention and tracking skills. They experience and develop an understanding of cause and effect and environmental control, primarily through the use of switches, but also through ‘roller ball’ and ‘joystick’ controls.
Indoor gym and physiotherapy room
Pupils have the opportunity to work with our HLTA on their health and fitness in the specially purchased gym equipment. This room also enables pupils to work on their physiotherapy programmes that have been set by the physiotherapist.
